How long is a piece of string?
...we will always be totally honest with our quotes.
It is a question that is asked often and we understand why that is, because we have been in the same situation. There are many publishers out there who will tell you exactly what you want to hear and then hit you with the price tag. We don't do that. Michael and Jo see it as vital that we are upfront with all costs so that you know exactly what you are getting and how much it is going to be. But every project is different: word counts vary; not all writing abilities are the same; and the services required are often determined by the project itself. It is with this in mind that we provide examples below of how much work we think a project will consist of from the outset, so that you can gauge as best as possible what your project may cost before you engage with us. The following examples are designed to be a guide only, but rest assured, we will take your unique project and price our services within the following framework as best as we can.
Example one: a ghostwritten biography. Based on eight hour-long interviews, creating eight chapters of approximately 5,000 words each, so a 40,000-word book, and including all formatting, cover design and upload: £999.00.
Example two: proofreading an 80,000-word manuscript: £400.00.
With additional formatting, cover design and upload: £800.00.
Example three: sub-editing a 50,000-word manuscript: £350.00.
With additional formatting, cover design and upload: £700.00.
The cost of a longer or shorter manuscript will be adjusted accordingly at the conclusion of the project, with your full involvement and agreement beforehand.
At Jem, we realise that although we feel these prices are extremely competitive, we also know that they can represent a prohibitive expense if asked for upfront. So we don't. Instead we offer payment plans to suit your every circumstance. Typically we will accept a 25% deposit with two additional payments during the writing process, and followed by a final payment for the completion of the work. The last payment will be based on the final word count, which will have been discussed before we begin working together. There will be no hidden costs, whatsoever. Should an issue arise, we will keep you informed at every stage.
What happens next?
Your book will always be your book. Once we have produced and submitted your manuscript online, you will get 100% of all royalties from the sale of it. We will also provide you with as many author copies as you wish and not charge you for this service; we will simply ask for the costs of the author copies and the postage and packaging to send them to you. Our role is to get you published; what happens subsequently is up to you to decide. We will always be approachable and do whatever we can to help you going forward.
